I worked out this melody on a fiddle, which is more expressive than a keyboard. So put in lots of expression. The short, one measure, phrases can get obnoxious to the performer (though probably not so much to the hearer). For that reason, there needs to be a great deal of variation on how these phrases are to be performed. In the first line, fermatas keep them separate. In the second line the long phrase is meant to connect them. Accelerate to the middle of that long phrase. The third line adds an alto voice. The fourth line contrasts staccato against legato. And in the last line it is done just a little slower, with a long hold in the middle and an enlargement at the end (slower and louder).
