This traditional negro spiritual is a plea for deliverance from bondage:

Go down Moses. Tell ol’ Pharaoh, “Let my people go.”

The sentiment should be felt by any Christian, waiting upon Jesus, in one sense to deliver others – friends and family – from the bondage of sin, but in another sense to finally bring the world His kingdom, delivering the us from the bondage of Satan forever.

Play it slowly, mysteriously, mournfully, with jazz eighths and a strong pulse. In the interlude section play with such rubato that the left hand is detached from the right.
